“What a beautiful feeling when the sun lights up this scene of the holy family” – this is what many say when they see this antique window. Its provenance- ” it came out of the basement of a New York mansion, church unknown”. It does have cracks, approx 9 of them. They are from less than an inch to 4 in length. Some you can’t see from afar, only when you stand in front up close. I talked to two different dealer/repair artisans. I planned to bring it to the recommended studio in Westchester County, NY but just haven’t had the weekday time off from work to do so. This quote included multi-cracked baby head, epoxy edge glue. Other cracks- apply a lead flange over each piece on both sides of the glass and solder joints. I also recommend a new wood frame or at least it should be re-fortified too. All of the lead is intact. Photographs 4,5, and 12 show some of the cracks- like the lamb’s neck and Jesus’ face. One stained glass shop owner in Stamford, CT remarked: You have a rare, high- valued window since it has painting on both sides. She admitted she wasn’t skilled in painted stained glass and is the one who recommended the Westchester shop. I posted photos taken up close, on angles to help you view the surface paint on both sides. See photographs number 3 and 4. Photo number 7 shows how the backside has the beautiful scene viewed in reverse. Dimensions: The visible stained glass- 64 1/8″ tall at the peak; 26 1/8″ wide. The large stained glass piece including the wood frame- 5′ 11″ tall at the peak and 32 3/8″ wide. As found- the bottom frame has a metal support that extends past the right edge of the wood frame. It is 39 3/4 wide. The wood frame, with some nice aged hardware, varies from 3″ to 3 3/16″ wide and is 1 3/4 thick. Please see close-up photo number 8. Due to its bottom left panel location, this makes me think it is either an artist’s symbol or curved signature letters, or maybe not- just more rock circles? The Holy Virgin Mary, Joseph, baby Jesus and the Lamb of God are featured along with church spires in the upper section. Mary, seated, is 30 tall! Please view the photos of the lower section that has 2 Angels, verse from St Luke, 2nd Chapter, 40 Verse. And the Child grew and waxed strong in spirit filled with wisdom and the Grace of God upon him. Does anyone know the significance of the angel’s eyes being closed? Please contact me with any questions you may have. When the sun lights this special work of artistic craftsmanship up- it is simply breathtaking.
